Cordyceps - a true powerhouse
For over 4000 years Cordyceps has been used in Chinese herbal medicine because of its impressive powers. In fact, the Chinese are so fond of it that Cordyceps has traditionally been one of the most widely used ingredients in their herbal medicine. The Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus, it grows in the body of insects – unfortunately these insects do not survive. Use of this mushroom has a strengthening and invigorating effect on the human body, making it a very effective compound, in addition, it is known as a potency enhancer.
Can Cordyceps improve exercise performance?
Scientists believe that this mushroom increases the production of molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP), precisely this molecule is essential for providing energy to the muscles in our body. This can significantly improve the way our body uses oxygen, especially during intense exercise.
A study tested the effects on the exercise capacity of 30 healthy adults while using an exercise bike. The participants were administered either 3 grams of synthetic Cordyceps or a placebo for six weeks. At the end of the study period, maximum oxygen uptake capacity (VO2) had increased by up to 7% in the participants who had been given Cordyceps while those given a placebo showed no improvement. Another study examined the effects of a mushroom mix that also contained Cordyceps on young adults. After 3 weeks, the participants’ VO2 max value had increased by 11% compared to the control group that received a placebo.
Elderly people have traditionally used Cordyceps to reduce fatigue and boost strength and desire for sex. Researchers believe (but have not yet proven) that their antioxidant content may explain their potential against aging. Several studies have shown that Cordyceps increases antioxidants in older mice, improving memory and sexual function. Antioxidants are molecules that fight cell damage by neutralizing free radicals, which can otherwise contribute to disease and aging. One study found that mice given Cordyceps lived several months longer than mice given a placebo. Another study found that Cordyceps extended the lifespan of fruit flies, supporting the belief that they have anti-aging benefits. However, it is not known if Cordyceps has the same benefits against aging in humans.

Slowing the growth of tumors
For years, the potential of Cordyceps to slow the growth of tumors has been in the spotlight, as researchers believe that the fungi may have growth retarding effects in a variety of ways. Studies in the laboratory (test tube studies) have already shown that this mushroom inhibits the growth of many types of cancer cells. Some examples are
- Lung cancer
- Carcinoid cancer
- Skin cancer
- Liver cancer
Studies on mice have already proven that the Cordyceps has antitumor effects on lymphoma, melanoma and lung cancer. Also than this mushroom reverses the side effects of various forms of cancer therapy, including leukopenia. However, it is wise to realize that these studies have been done in laboratories and on animals and thus not yet on humans. Although the results are promising it is too early to conclude that the results on humans will be exactly the same, this has to be proven scientifically first.
Libido and fertility
Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, cordyceps is used as a libido stimulant. Modern research in rats also shows improvement in this area, in both female and male specimens. Among other things, a significant reduction in abnormal spermatozoa was observed, as well as a significant increase in the size and weight of the sexual organs. Other research shows a marked increasing effect on the quantity of male sex hormones and sperm. In vitro research indicates that this effect may be achieved through stimulation of steroid hormone production. In addition, scientists believe that cordyceps increases female fertility and provides a greater success rate in IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatments. This effect could possibly be attributed to the estrogen-boosting effect of cordyceps.
So the Cordyceps has been used for an incredibly long time for all kinds of purposes, from improving libido to inhibiting the growth of tumors. Much research has been done and many studies are still ongoing, although few studies have been done on humans we can say that it is a very powerful mushroom.
