Microdosing with psilocybine
The most accessible way of microdosing psychedelics is with psilocybin or magic mushrooms or truffles. Truffles are legel in quite some countries. Mushrooms more often are not legal but a growkit to grow your own is. Both the mushrooms as the truffles contain the exact same active ingrediënt psilocybine.
The difference between mushrooms and truffles
If both contain the same active ingredient, why would you choose one and not the other I hear you think. Therefore it is important to mention the differences between magic mushrooms and truffles.
The first difference is in the growth, the mushroom grows above ground and the truffle grows below ground. The magic mushroom contain (mostly) a higher concentration of the active ingredient psilocybin, the magic mushroom also contains an average of 90% water. The actual amount of psilocybin can vary a lot, differences with a factor of 4 are normal, but there is even talk of differences of a factor of 10! This is also one of the reasons why you have to dry the mushrooms before micro-dosing. If you would consume them undried, one mushroom can contain a much higher dose of psilocybin than the next. By drying, grinding and mixing them together you get a powder with a fairly constant amount of active ingredient so you can work more accurately when microdosing.
So on average the truffle contains a lower amount of psilocybin and contains less water than the magic mushroom, namely about 70%. In addition, truffles also have a much more consistent amount of the active substance, which in turn makes them more suitable to use undried for microdosing. On average there are about 1 to 2 milligram psilocybin per gram of fresh truffle and this is also what is considered a microdose, although the exact ideal amount, the sweet-spot can vary from person to person.
How to start with truffles
As mentioned, truffles are the easiest (and most importantly legal) way to start microdosing because you can buy them legally in a lot of countries (if you are 18+).
However, there are many different species available with all kinds of trendy names that promise you a wide range of effects. This marketing is mainly focused on the recreational “trip use” of the truffle and it means very little if you want to microdose. If you are going to buy them, then the amount of psilocybin is of interest, so be aware of this when you walk into the smartshop or webshop. Protip: get our easy to dose microdosing truffles!
There are also companies that offer truffles in special microdosing portions of 1 gram fresh truffle. Yet there are different types of truffles on the market to choose from, besides psilocybin there are more active substances in it and unfortunately not much research has been done. The effects can differ between the different species and each person reacts differently to them. It may take some time to find what works best for you. There are almost no side effects, but some users experience nausea and a nervous feeling sometimes.
Fresh truffles should be kept in the refrigerator, but protect them from moisture because that causes mold and affects the quality. You can also dry them and then you can keep them outside the refrigerator. If you are going to dry them you can do this in a food dryer but not everyone will have one so you can cut them into small pieces and put them on a sheet of kitchen paper, on or near the heater until they become hard. After this you grind them with, for example, a coffee grinder and before using it you can easily weigh it with a scale. You can also consider putting your ideal amount into a capsule and keep it that way.
Mushrooms: grow your own!
Unfortunately, you can’t order them in the store or online because that is illegal in most countries. What you can do is order a grow kit and grow them yourself and that’s pretty simple, you don’t need to have green fingers!
The grow kit will come with clear instructions so we won’t go into that here but still a small summary of the process:
- Wash your hands / forearms thoroughly before working.
- Place the grow kit in a place with enough daylight but never directly in the sunlight.
- The ideal temperature is around 23 degrees.
- After 1 to 3 weeks the first mushrooms appear.
- After this it takes about a week until they are ready to harvest.
- After this you can also dry them as just described for the truffles.
The advantage of home cultivation is that it is ultimately cheaper than buying truffles, they have a higher content of psilocybin and there are fewer side effects reported by users than truffles. And besides all that, growing them is actually a lot of fun!
