Chaga mushroom is a type of mushroom that grows mainly on the bark of birch trees in cold climates, such as those of Scandinavia, Siberia, Canada and Alaska. In English we call it Chaga mushroom and in Latin Inonotus obliquus. For centuries Chaga has been used as a traditional medicine in Scandinavia, mainly to boost the immune system and for general health. Chaga is low in calories, rich in fiber and filled with antioxidants.
Chaga mushrooms contain an array of beneficial, active ingredients. Some of the main ingredients are polysaccharides, antioxidants, betulinic acid, phytosterols and melanin. Furthermore, Chaga contains plant steroids, such as lanosterol and inotodiol. Individually, all of these active ingredients have specific effects, but together they are stronger and all contribute to boosting your immune system. Therefore, the fungus can help prevent and fight inflammation and infection.
Chaga grows best in cold climates, such as Russia. There they grow abundantly in the wild. The mushroom reproduces by nesting on the bark of a tree. These are usually birch trees. Here, the mushroom stays just as long as the birch tree lives. Often this is 5 to 7 years, after the Chaga has nested on the tree. At first glance, the Chaga does not look like a traditional mushroom at all. You can recognize this mushroom by the blackened bulge on a tree. It looks like a small (or large, depending on the size of the mushroom) growth. However, when you open the mushroom, it has a bright orange color and is packed with beneficial substances.
The Chaga is considered a superfood with beneficial properties. Especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is widely used. One of the best known properties of this mushroom is its ability to strengthen the immune system so that you are less susceptible to diseases. The story goes that there was a village in Siberia where the inhabitants did not drink coffee, but tea from the Chaga mushroom. They did this to save costs. Coffee was very expensive in those days. And what did it turn out to be? In that village there were remarkably few sick people. The inhabitants themselves say that it is because of the tea made from the Chaga mushroom.
To make a highly concentrated and potent extract from the dried Chaga, we subject the Chaga to 3 different, technically advanced extraction methods. It is important that Chaga is treated in the right way since only in this way the Chaga actually becomes bioactive. When Chaga is consumed as a raw powder, our body is not able to digest it and all health promoting substances will be lost. Our extraction method ensures that all useless substances are removed from the mushroom and that the health-promoting substances are concentrated. Foodsporen Chaga extract has the active phytonutrients present in active form and is a food supplement designed for optimal absorption into the body.

There are numerous reasons, we would like to highlight 2 of them. Chaga is the most powerful source of antioxidants and superoxide dismutase (SOD). To understand why this is important and special, you should know what antioxidants are.
Free radicals are harmful to the body. These molecules contain electrons. Normally, electrons occur in pairs. But with free radicals, they are unpaired. This makes them highly reactive and allows them to trace electrons from other molecules, creating more free radicals. This is obviously bad news because when this happens a lot in the body, this phenomenon causes damage to cell membranes, DNA and even starts the growth of cancerous tumors.
So we want to prevent oxidation at all costs. Antioxidants are molecules that actually counteract this process. They neutralize the free radicals and, as it were, turn them off before they can do any damage. SOD or superoxide dismutase is one of the most important antioxidants our body needs. SOD is very active against the most dangerous free radicals (superoxide radicals). Chaga is chock-full of antioxidants and SOD and has been proven to be a powerful agent against free radicals.
When the body fights a disease, inflammation supports the fight. But sometimes inflammation progresses from a short-term attack to a chronic health problem. Some diseases, particularly chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis , are linked to inflammation. Recent research suggests that some conditions not considered inflammatory, including depression, may be partially due to chronic inflammation.
Chaga’s role in regulating cytokine production may also help control inflammation. This suggests a role for Chaga in fighting autoimmune diseases and possibly some other diseases. According to an animal study, Chaga extract may protect against the effects of chronic inflammation of the pancreas.
